Pallagrello Bianco: Tradition and Innovation in the Heart of Campania

Pallagrello Bianco is one of Campania's oenological gems, an indigenous grape variety that is experiencing a new season of success, thanks to its deep connection with the territory and its unique characteristics. Cultivated mainly in the areas of Caiazzo and Castel Campagnano, in the province of Caserta, Pallagrello Bianco represents the winemaking history and tradition of this region, as well as the ability of local winemakers to enhance the peculiarities of the territory.

Ancient and Noble Origins

The origins of this vine probably date back to Greek colonization, and it was widely cultivated in Roman times, where it was called "Pilleolata". During the Bourbon domination, Pallagrello Bianco became the favorite wine of Ferdinand IV of Bourbon, who cultivated it in his prestigious Vigna del Ventaglio. This vine has a rich history of anecdotes and traditions, which have led it to be considered a true treasure of Campanian viticulture.

Characteristics of the Vine and the Territory

Pallagrello Bianco is distinguished by its small, cylindrical bunches, with spherical yellow-green berries, from which its name "pallagrello" derives, meaning "small ball" in the local dialect. The vine is known for its delicacy and low yield, but the quality of the grapes is exceptional. It grows in clayey and calcareous soils, typical of the reliefs of Monte Taburno and Matese, at an altitude of about 350 meters. These mineral soils, combined with optimal sun exposure and temperature fluctuations between day and night, give the grapes a distinct aromatic complexity.

A Wine with Personality

The wine produced with Pallagrello Bianco has an intense straw-yellow color and a rich and complex aromatic bouquet. On the nose, notes of wild fennel, candied ginger, and toasted hazelnut stand out, while on the palate the wine is balanced, with a slight savory vein that enhances its freshness. This vine, although less productive than others, yields wines of great quality, ideal for those seeking a refined and authentic oenological experience.

The Rediscovery of an Oenological Treasure

In recent years, Pallagrello Bianco has experienced a true rebirth, thanks to the work of local winemakers who have invested in enhancing this indigenous grape variety. Often obtained from vineyards over 20 years old, they have helped to make this variety known beyond regional borders, conquering enthusiasts and connoisseurs.
